Custom Pergolas in Northern Virginia

We design and install pergolas over decks and patios across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, Prince William, and Alexandria — from a site-built wood structure to a StruXure Cabana X with motorized louvers that closes against the rain.
The first question to settle is how much shade you actually want, because that decides which kind of pergola you're buying.

Who builds custom pergolas in Northern Virginia?

Whitmer Decks is a design-build outdoor living company founded in 2004 by Cliff and Lisa Whitmer and based in Dulles. We install Pergolux and StruXure Cabana X pergola systems and build custom wood pergolas across Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, Prince William, and Alexandria, and in the towns of Vienna and Herndon and the city of Leesburg. We're TimberTech Pro Platinum and TrexPro Gold contractors, members of NADRA, and Northern Virginia Magazine has named us a top builder seven years running.

How much shade does a pergola actually give you?

Less than most people expect, if it's a traditional one. An open pergola — posts, beams, and spaced rafters overhead — filters the sun rather than blocking it. The shade is striped, it moves across the space through the day, and at two in the afternoon in July there isn't much of it. That's the look people fall in love with in photos, and it's a real architectural asset. It's just not a roof.

If what you want is to sit outside in the heat of the day, or stay out when it starts to rain, you want one of two things: a louvered system that opens and closes, or a fixed or retractable canopy. Both are still pergolas. They just do a different job.

We install all three, and the consultation usually starts with this question rather than with materials.

Three kinds of pergola

  • Open rafters — filtered, moving shade; architectural definition
  • Louvered — StruXure Cabana X; rotating louvers, closes against rain
  • Canopy — Pergolux; fixed or retractable fabric overhead
  • Any of the three over a deck, patio, or outdoor kitchen
  • Lighting, fans, and heaters designed in from the start

The systems we install

StruXure Cabana X. An aluminum pergola with motorized louvers. Open them for full sun, angle them for shade, close them and the roof sheds water. It's the closest thing to a pavilion that still reads as a pergola, and it's what we recommend when the goal is using the space through a Virginia summer and into the fall.

Pergolux. Aluminum frames with fixed or retractable canopies. Lighter visually than a louvered system, lower cost, and a good fit over a dining area or a grill run where you want consistent shade without a full roof.

Site-built wood. A traditional pergola we frame on site to match the deck or the house — the right choice when the pergola is there for architecture and definition rather than weather protection. It takes the same upkeep as any exterior wood.

  • StruXure Cabana X louvered pergolas
  • Pergolux fixed and retractable canopy pergolas
  • Custom site-built wood pergolas
  • Integrated lighting, fans, heaters, and speakers
  • Pergolas designed with a new deck, patio, or outdoor kitchen

Not sure: That's what the consultation is for

What to decide before we draw it

A pergola is a simple structure with a few decisions that are hard to change afterward.

Attached or Freestanding

Attaching to the house ties the pergola into the roofline and saves two posts. Freestanding gives more freedom on placement and avoids flashing into the house wall. Which one makes sense depends on where the sun comes from and where the door is.

What It Sits On

On a patio, posts go to their own footings — at least 24 inches to the frost line here, and on hard ground. On an existing deck, the deck framing has to carry the posts, which it usually wasn't built for, so we check the structure before anything else.

Power and Light

Lighting, a fan, and an outdoor heater change how late and how long into the year you use the space. They're easy to run while we're framing and awkward afterward, so we design them in even if you add the fixtures later.

Design is most of the work

A pergola is one of the few outdoor structures where the proportions make or break it. Too light and it looks flimsy; too heavy and it closes in the space. Getting that right on paper before anything is cut is most of the job.

To Scale and Photorealistic

Our designs are drawn to scale and rendered photorealistically, so you see the proportions against your house before you approve anything.

Live Changes

On many projects we adjust the design with you on a video call — move a post, change the beam depth, swap louvers for canopy — and you see it right away.

Part of a Larger Plan

Most of the pergolas we build go over a deck, patio, or outdoor kitchen we're also building, designed together as one space.

Year-Round Building

We build through the winter. Homeowners often assume outdoor construction stops in December; ours doesn't.

How we work

We've been a small company by choice since Cliff and Lisa Whitmer started it in 2004. The core crew is full-time carpenters who work for us, plus a small circle of specialists we've handpicked and worked with for years.

1. Design Consultation

A designer walks the property, watches where the sun falls, and talks through what you want the space to do.

2. Design

To-scale, photorealistic drawings — adjusted with you until the proportions and the shade are right, and designed to the budget you have.

3. Permits

Attached pergolas and anything with electrical usually need a permit. We file in Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, Prince William, Alexandria, Vienna, Herndon, and Leesburg, and prepare the HOA package for you to submit where one applies.

4. Build

Crews arrive between 7:30 and 8:00 and work until 4:00 or 5:00, year-round. Start dates depend on the season and the scope, so we give you a real schedule at consultation. One year on workmanship; manufacturer warranties on StruXure and Pergolux systems.

Where we build

Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Arlington County, Prince William County, and the City of Alexandria, including Vienna, Herndon, Leesburg, Burke, McLean, Falls Church, Manassas, and Ashburn.

If the pergola is part of a deck, patio, or outdoor kitchen project, we'll design the whole space at the first consultation.
